Where to Shop

One of the main shopping districts in Versailles is based within the Quartier Notre-Dame, where the Notre Dame marketplace is a particular favourite. On Tuesdays, Fridays and again on Saturdays, an open-air market takes place here, on the Place du Marché Notre Dame.

Antiques shops in Versailles are in plentiful supply and the best selection tends to be concentrated on central streets, such as the Rue du Bailliage and also the Rue des Deux Portes, along with other stores. Close to the Notre Dame market, further antiques shopping is located within the Hôtel du Bailliage et Ancienne Geôle, on the Rue de la Pourvoierie. Around 300 shops are based within the area of Versailles known as the Triangle d'Or, which is marked by streets such as the Rue Carnot, the Rue Hoche and also the Rue de la Paroisse. There is enough choice here to easily while away an entire day.

However, if you wish to immerse yourself in some serious window shopping, then head out of Versailles and into the neighbouring city of Paris, where everything imaginable is for sale, such as pricey Cartier diamond jewellery, high-end Parisian fashion and cheap bargains at the flea markets (marchés aux puces) around St. Ouen. Popular department stores in Paris include the Galeries Layfayette, Le Bon Marché and Le Printemps. Visitors from Versailles looking for the highest concentration of fashion boutiques should head to the Right Bank area and in particular, the Paris Triangle d'Or, which comprises the Place des Victoires, the Rue du Faubourg St. Honoré and the Rue des Rosiers.
