Photo of the Palace entranceThe number one reason that people come to this suburb of Paris is to visit the Château de Versailles and this spectacular palace is rather like a gigantic museum in its own right.

The Musée de l'Histoire de France is located within the Palace of Versailles itself and this interesting museum documents the history of the French parliamentary process, from the revolution right up to the actually collapse of the French royal family. Highlights here include a range of important paintings and portraits, along with various engravings and artefacts.

General Information

The Musée des Carrosses is also located within the Palace of Versailles and offers the chance to see some unusual carriages and historic sleighs, which can be found at the Grande Ecurie du Roi. This particular museum is only open at weekends and closed during the winter months.

Located alongside the government ministries, the Musée Lambinet is a grand 18th-century mansion and home to an array of antiquities and treasures from the period of King Louis XV. The Coucher Museum is close by and may also be of interest, although for some of the very best French museums in existence, you really will need to leave Versailles and head to nearby Paris, where you will be quite overwhelmed by the choice. Favourites include the Maison de Victor Hugo, the Musée Carnavalet, the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle, the Musée de Notre Dame and also the Musée Rodin, to name but a few.
