Picture of sculpture in the city centreThe art scene in the Coventry area has gained pace in recent years and if you are looking to admire either traditional and more contemporary style art works, there are a number of good art galleries to be found here. The centrally located Herbert Gallery is one of Coventry's best offerings, although the Mead Gallery and the city's University of Warwick are also worth a visit.

Nearby and just a short drive from Coventry, both the Nuneaton Museum and Art Gallery, and the Rugby Art Gallery and Museum, have much to offer visitors and feature free admission.

One of the biggest exhibition venues in the whole of the West Midlands area, the Mead Gallery is located within the grounds of the University of Warwick, on the southern side of the city. The displays here vary greatly and incorporate a wide range of the visual arts, including photographic exhibits, paintings, sculptures in various mediums, and local craft works.

The Herbert Gallery

The Herbert art gallery is located in the heart of Coventry city centre and is extremely close to the main shopping precinct and also the cathedral. Recently renovated and updated, the Herbert Gallery features two main exhibition spaces, where many impressive paintings and sculptures are displayed to best effect, together with a number of temporary exhibits and items of local historic significance. There is also an on-site cafe here serving hot refreshments at affordable prices, all through the day.

Nuneaton Museum and Art Gallery

Known for their beautifully landscaped gardens, as much as their excellent collection of classical paintings and temporary exhibitions, the Nuneaton Museum and Art Gallery lies just a short distance to the north of Coventry. Other highlights include an interesting display about the famous Victorian writer, George Eliot, numerous seasonal events, and a popular tearoom.

Rugby Art Gallery and Museum

Celebrating the town's cultural heritage and rich past, the Rugby Art Gallery and Museum features a regularly changing display of paintings and other types of art. Housed in a modern redbrick building, complete with stylish roof, this museum and gallery combination first opened its doors in 2000 and features a number of prominent 20th-century prints and also rather surprisingly, a fairly extensive collection of local Roman artefacts.
