View of the town's main roadGetting around the town of Eastbourne is very simple, with bus transport being an affordable way to travel within East Sussex. Many visitors to Eastbourne simply choose to walk around the town centre, with the main places of interest never being far from the beachfront.

If you are feeling especially energetic, then you may like to walk or cycle along part of the famous South Downs Way, which stretches for some 161 km / 100 miles and connects Eastbourne with Winchester. Off-peak 'Downlander' tickets are another good way to travel outside of the town and across the South Downs, combining both bus and rail transport, and allowing unlimited use all day long.

Car Rental

There are a number of major roads surrounding Eastbourne. The most notable of these roads include the A27, which heads is a western direction to Brighton, as well as the A259 heading east to Hastings. The M25 motorway is just a little more than 64 km / 40 miles to the north, while the M23 can be picked up at Crawley, the M20 at Folkestone, the M27 at Portsmouth, and the M3 at Southampton. Trains

Run by Southern Railway, train services in the Sussex area run at regular 30-minute intervals to London Victoria, with an overall journey time of just 90 minutes or thereabouts. There are also reliable rail links to Haywards Heath and Gatwick Airport and to towns located along the south-east coast, including half-hourly trains to Brighton, which can be reached in just 20 minutes.

Buses and Coaches

Local bus transport is readily available, being operated by Stagecoach (previously Eastbourne Buses) and provides a cheap and simple way to reach most areas of the town, as well as to neighbouring destinations, such as East Grinstead, Hailsham, Polegate, Tunbridge Wells and Uckfield. Further buses are provided by National Express and travel along much of the Sussex coastline, offering daily connections to Brighton (50 minutes), Dover (40 minutes) and London's Victoria Station (two hours and 45 minutes).

Boats and Ferries

The harbour town of Newhaven is located just a 25-minute drive to the west of Eastbourne and provides popular ferry transportation to the nearby commune of Dieppe in France. Alternatively, if you are intending to travel to France, further connections can be found at the ports of Dover and Portsmouth and also via the Channel Tunnel at Folkestone.
