Derby Shopping and Districts

(Derby, Derbyshire, England, UK)

Market Hall pictureThere is much shopping to be enjoyed in the centre of Derby, with a lavish selection of independent stores and outlets based around the historic Cathedral Quarter. The old town area is full of character and comprises a pleasant mixture of trendy fashion boutiques, with more familiar brand names, such as Paul Smith and Armani.

The Cathedral Quarter in Derby is based around Sadler Gate and this is certainly where locals choose to shop at the weekend, along with the Cornmarket, Iron Gate and St. Peter's Street. Many people shopping in this part of the city choose to take a break and stop off at one of the numerous street cafes, while others prefer to head to Westfield Derby for some serious retail therapy.

Where to Shop

Westfield Derby is a giant indoor shopping mall that is currently called home by just under 200 outlets and eateries, and also features a large Showcase Cinema de Lux multiscreen complex. The biggest department stores at the Westfield Derby shopping mall include BHS, Boots the Chemist, Debenhams, M&S, Matalan, Next, Sainsbury's and WH Smith.

Established in the mid-1970s, the Westfield mall was previously known as the Eagle Centre and was extended and modernised in 2007, doubling the overall size at the cost of around £340 million. Each year, more than 25 million shoppers come here to spend their money, leaving areas of Derby city centre rather quiet and devoid of occupied stores. Of note, the Westfield Derby offers late-night shopping on Thursdays and Fridays, when stores stay open until 20:00.
