Central view of the cityFor art appreciation, the Derby Museum and Art Gallery is a good place to come and contains not only a permanent collection of paintings of local interest, but various artefacts collected from around this part of Derbyshire. The Quad complex has gained quite a reputation for its contribution to the arts scene in Derby and offers a comprehensive gallery space, along with further attractions.

If you are left wanting more, then there really are plenty more art galleries close to Derby, in the surrounding towns and village of Alfreton, Ashbourne, Bakewell, Buxton, Draycott, Foston and Matlock.

The Derby Museum and Art Gallery is located on the Strand, being close to the Iron Gate (Irongate) and Cornmarket, and off Sadler Gate and St. James's Street. Visitors will be able to enjoy an extensive collection of paintings, many of which were created by acclaimed landscape and portrait artist Joseph Wright (1734 to 1797), who was actually born close by. Also housed within the museum is an extensive collection of Derby porcelain, some of which is more than 200 years old. The archaeological gallery is home to a number of surprising relics, which include Stone Age objects and even two well-preserved Egyptian mummies. A relatively new addition is the Time Tunnel and walk-in cave, where you can learn more about native wildlife and geology from around Derbyshire.

Quad / Q Arts

Also known as 'Q Arts', the Quad is a trendy multimedia centre in the heart of the city and stands on the Market Place. The Quad comprises a gallery space, where exhibitions change on a regular basis and usually last approximately two months. Occasional lunchtime tours are provided by the curators of the Quad and allow visitors to learn more about the artists' inspirations and thoughts. Regular workshops and activities provide extra interest, while other onsite attractions include a two-screen cinema showing independent films and the Coors Cafe Bar, where 'Cine Suppers' from 17:00 onwards are always popular and include the price of the movie.
