(Derby, Derbyshire, England, UK)

A fairly large city located on the riverbanks of the River Derwent and within the East Midlands, Derby also serves as a 'unitary authority', being responsible for various governmental functions. Currently, the city's population is in the region of a quarter of a million people and this figure is slowly rising as the city steadily expands its boundaries and increases its available housing.

Derby is remembered by industrial historians as being the very spot where the Industrial Revolution was born. It was also where the world's earliest factory was founded, which was named Lombe's Mill and brought much subsequent wealth and success to the city. This silk throwing mill opened for business in 1721 and now serves as the home of the Derby Industrial Museum, being fully restored in recent years. Rolls Royce, Toyota and the Litchurch Lane Works are notable businesses based here today.

Tourists will find that there is certainly plenty to do in this busy city, with the multiple stalls trading within the Grade-II listed Market Hall providing a good place to start an exploration. You may also like to book a tour of the Royal Crown Derby factory, where you can learn all about the history of the city's most famous fine china. A visit to the cathedral may be of interest, since you are able to climb its tall 16th-century tower and enjoy some wonderful views of the city from high above the rooftops. For a taster of the Georgian era, be sure to check out the Pickford's House Museum of Georgian Life and Costume at Friar Gate, just down the road from the Friar Gate Bridge and the 18th-century gaol, where regular ghost walks are available.
