Located around 27 km / 17 miles east of Newquay, in the nearby town of St. Austell, the awesome Eden Project has become one of Cornwall's most visited tourist attractions. With several huge domed conservatories, the Humid Tropics Biodome is full of exotic plants and palm trees, and is actually the biggest of its kind in the world.

The Lost Gardens of Heligan

The renowned Lost Gardens of Heligan are around 22 km / 14 miles west of Newquay and close to Mevagissey. Opened in the early 1990s following a considerable restoration project, the gardens have been transformed and are now better than ever. Expect to see ancient tree ferns, a jungle area with enormous bamboo, many large ponds and plenty of colour at the Lost Gardens of Heligan. A restaurant with outdoor seating area and gift shop complete the main attractions.

Screech Owl Sanctuary

Founded in 1990 following a donation of many owls and other birds of prey from a private collector, the Screech Owl Sanctuary is close to Newquay and well worth the short drive. Many injured owls are nursed back to health here and captive breeding concentrates on rare and endangered species. Falconry displays are popular, as are the many surrounding attractions, such as the lakeside walk, playground area, tearoom and gift shop.

An appealing place to visit on a sunny day, the Springfields Pony Centre and Fun Park is close to Newquay and lies on the town's eastern outskirts. With numerous ponies, including miniature Shetland's and also classic Dartmoor ponies, the centre allows visitors to both ride and feed many of the animals here, such as lambs, goats and chickens. Further attractions at the Springfields Pony Centre include walking trails, picnic areas with woodland views, and of course the Fun Park itself, where you will find a lake where boating is on offer, trampolines, go-karts and an indoor play area suiting younger children.

One of the most popular family attractions in this part of Cornwall, the Crealy Great Adventure Park has much to offer. With a particularly tranquil and scenic setting, the Lappa Valley Steam Railway and Park is located in the St. Newlyn East area, on the most southerly outskirts of Newquay. Featuring a popular narrow 15-inch gauge railway dating back to the mid-19th century, a regular steam train travels along the 1.5-km / 1-mile route, passing pleasant scenery along the way. The main attractions at the East Wheal Rose Park include a crazy golf course, playground areas, walking trails, picnic areas, miniature train rides and a boating lake.

Located in the market town of St. Columb Major and close to Newquay, the attractions at the Cornish Bird of Prey Centre suit all ages and are especially popular with children. The centre stands off the A39 and contains more than 50 birds of prey, including many large eagles, owls and vultures. Regular flying demonstrations always draw large crowds, with plenty of gasps as the birds soar overhead. Other attractions at the Cornish Bird of Prey Centre include a number of exotic foreign birds, such as parrots, kookaburras and many colourful ducks, together with tearooms, where the traditional Cornish cream teas have become a speciality.
