There really are three art galleries that stand out from the crowd in Port Elizabeth, each of which has something special to offer.


These are the Ron Belling Art Gallery, the acclaimed Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum, and the Eastern Province Society of Arts and Crafts (EPSAC Community Arts Centre).

Ron Belling Art Gallery

The aviator, Ron Belling was one of South Africa's best aviation artists. His legacy includes a vast number of paintings, including 500-odd which have planes as their main subject matter. Many are displayed in this gallery, housed in a beautiful art deco building and designed by the famous South African architect, Gertruida Brinkman.
Open hours: Monday to Friday - 10:00 to 16:00, Saturday and Sunday 10:00 to 13:00 (closed second weekend of the month)

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum

Formerly known as the King George VI Art Gallery, the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum was first opened in 1956. Its collections comprise examples of South African art and British art, as well as Oriental art and printmaking from all over the world.
Open hours: Monday, Wednesday to Friday - 09:00 to 17:00, Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday - 14:00 - 17:00 (first Sunday of the month - 09:00 to 14:00)

Eastern Province Society of Arts and Crafts (EPSAC Community Arts Centre)

The Eastern Province Society of Arts and Crafts is often referred to as simply the 'EPSAC' and is a thriving community based gallery, where local artists from all around the Eastern Cape are actively promoted. Established as long ago as 1918, the Eastern Province Society of Arts and Crafts offers regular exhibitions of local South African arts and crafts, together with informative quarterly newsletters.
