Lying on Tennessee's southeastern border with Georgia, Chattanooga boasts good transportation and travel options, owing to the convenient nearby Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport and access to no less than three interstate highways.

Public transport is also good here, both from the airport and within the city itself. Shuttle and bus travel is readily available at the airport, while frequent electric buses operate within the busy downtown district, being completely free of charge.

Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport (CHA) / Arriving by Air

Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport is located just a few miles to the east of the city and receives flights with major carriers from a number of large US cities, including Atlanta and Memphis. Carriers include American Airlines, Delta, Northwest and US Airways. Road access to the downtown district is via Highway SR-153 south and Interstate I-75 west, while shuttle buses and taxi transport also provide downtown access.


Car Rental

Cars can be hired at Chattanooga Airport, with all major car rental transport companies represented here, including Avis, Budget, Hertz and National. Three major interstate highways converge at Chattanooga, with Interstate I-75 coming in from the north from Knoxville and carrying on south to Atlanta, Interstate I-24 arriving from Nashville in the northwest, and Interstate I-59 from Birmingham to the southwest.

Buses and Coaches

Greyhound buses travel to Chattanooga from Nashville, Atlanta and Charlotte throughout the day and from destinations as far afield as New York and Chicago. Within the downtown district itself, CARTA (the Chattanooga Area Regional Transit Authority) runs a free electric shuttle service that operates between Shuttle Park South and Shuttle Park North every five minutes.

Trains

Chattanooga used to receive Amtrak services, but you can no longer arrive here by rail. Atlanta is the nearest major rail center, with regular Amtrak arrivals and departures from major destinations. The CARTA Incline Railway provides transport to the historic Lookout Mountain and is the steepest passenger railway in the world.

Taxis

A slew of taxi firms provide travel from the airport into downtown Chattanooga, as well as within the city. Local companies include Checker Cabs, East Ridge Cabs, Mercury Cabs, the Millennium Taxi Service and United Taxi Operators.
