Charlotte has strong religious roots, being home to a plethora of places of worship . The city serves as the historic seat of Southern Presbyterianism and is also the birthplace of famous American Christian evangelist Billy Graham.

Local churches cover numerous different religions, such as Baptist, Catholic, Episcopalian, Lutheran, Methodist and Presbyterian, with many people affectionately referring to Charlotte as 'The City of Churches'. Located within the boundaries of the city are a number of 'mega-churches', such as the easterly Calvary, which resides on Kilborne Drive and is an iconic local building, boasting a seating capacity topping 5,000 worshippers and an organ with just under 11,500 pipes (one of the world's biggest).
