Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport (BHB) Information

(Bar Harbor, Mount Desert Island, Maine - ME, USA)

The Hancock County Bar Harbor Airport is a small, regional airport serving the popular Maine resort destination of Mount Desert Island and the Acadia National Park. This beautifully rugged island, one of America's oldest summer vacation spots, gets busy during the warm, summer months. Due to its remote location, Mount Desert Island is best accessed by air.

There are only two airlines serving Bar Harbor. Cape Air is the main carrier, offering year-round, daily direct flights to Boston. Cape Air partner Jet Blue has a good selection of connecting flights out of Boston, while Pen Air is the other carrier and also offers a range of mainly seasonal flights to Boston. Private and charter flights boost traffic during the summer months.

The airport's tiny terminal offers limited passengers amenities beyond transportation. Arriving travelers can rent a car from Hertz or Enterprise, or take the seasonal Island Explorer bus service to Bar Harbor and other prominent towns on Mount Desert Island. The airport is situated to the north-west of Bar Harbor, with driving conditions on the island being fairly relaxed. All of the island's villages are easily accessed by car from the facility.

The Hancock County Bar Harbor Airport is located 8 miles / 13 km southeast of Ellsworth (on mainland Maine) and roughly 12 miles / 19 km to the northwest of Bar Harbor, being within easy drive of the other tiny villages on Mount Desert Island. There are few amenities inside the terminal, so travelers need to come prepared with any sundries they may need for their trip. This hub also serves as a base for recreational flights via biplane, Cessna or glider. Two companies provide scenic flights and pilot training here.

Facilities:

Taxis

Taxis arrive at the airport to meet each of the flights. They are the main form of transport for arriving passengers who do not rent their own vehicle. Taxis use meters to determine the fare and can take passengers anywhere on Mount Desert Island, including both Bernard and Tremont to the south (roughly 30 minutes away). Other popular taxi destinations on the island include the villages of Bass Harbor, Bernard, Eden, Gotts Island, Hulls Cove, Manset, Salisbury Cove, Seal Cove, Seal Harbor and Somesville.

Cars

Having a rental car is the most convenient way to explore Mount Desert Island and its many historic villages, scenic seaside overlooks and national parklands. The Hancock County Bar Harbor Airport is home to Hertz, which operates all year round, and Enterprise, which is open between May and October. Both agencies keep a good stock of vehicles, although during the busy summer season the most popular models often sell out, so advance booking is highly recommended.

Buses

When the peak summer tourist season hits Bar Harbor, the Island Explorer bus rolls into action. This commercial bus provides transportation from the airport to many destinations around Mount Desert Island, including most villages and the entrance to the Acadia National Park. The Island Explorer only operates from the end of June until Columbus Day (8th October).
