Since Frankfort sits on the northern side of Kentucky, it is located relatively close to a number of larger cities in both this state and its neighbors, Indiana and Ohio. Interstate I-64 is the principal freeway passing through the city and lies on the southerly outskirts, where it runs eastwards to the Kentucky Horse Park and Lexington. The I-64 also heads to the west, all the way to Louisville, passing by Shelbyville and Jeffersontown along the route.

Airports / Arriving by Air

The Capital City Airport is the closest, although this facility is only used for general aviation, rather than by scheduled airlines. Located directly north of Frankfort and reached by traveling along Highway US-127 / Interstate I-71, the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport is the region's largest, serving some 1.5 million passengers each year and coming with a comprehensive set of ground transport options.

Car Rental

If you have opted for hire car transport and are intending to drive northwards from Frankfort to Cincinnati, you will find that this metropolis can be reached by taking the I-64 east and joining the I-75. Alternatively, Highway US-127 (Owenton Road) is a fairly winding road that travels directly north, joining the I-71 and ultimately reaching Richwood, Florence, Erlanger, Lakeside Park, Fort Mitchell, Covington and Cincinnati, as well as heading south to Lawrenceburg.

There are three main bus routes in operation within the boundaries of Frankfort - the Blue Line (East Route), the Red Line (North Route) and the Orange Line (West Route). Together these lines travel to all of the principal attractions, historical sites, government buildings, hospitals and shopping centers. These destinations include Brighton Park, Capital Avenue, Clinton Street, Collins Street, Eastwood, the Fort Boone Plaza, Franklin Square, Lakeview Park, Lyons Drive, Meadowview Drive, Montrose Park, Rosewood Lane, Sunset Drive, Versailles Road and the Wilkinson Boulevard, amongst others.

Trains

There is currently no Amtrak train transport servicing the city of Frankfort.
