Frankfort Restaurants and Dining

(Frankfort, Kentucky - KY, USA)

Although this city may well be Kentucky's state capital, it is not overly large and doesn't come with a particularly extensive dining scene. Most of the restaurants are to be found concentrated around the city center, being sited along roads such as Clinton Street, the High Street and West Broadway Street, close to the Church of the Ascension and the Kentucky Historical Society / Old State Capitol.

Restaurants in Frankfort are also located around the East Side and West Side areas, where popular dining options include Asian, Italian and Mexican eateries, as well as plenty of fast food.

Typical Kentucky dishes are similar to those of traditional Southern cuisine, with fried chicken, steaks, catfish and various barbecues. Meals are often accompanied by cheese grits, green beans and fried green tomatoes.

Where to Eat

Families visiting Frankfort often favor pizzerias, with the Buddy's Pizza eatery on West Broadway Street being as good as they come. On a sunny evening, you may like to order yourself a takeaway pizza and then enjoy an impromptu spot of al fresco picnic dining on the lawns of the nearby historic Old State Capitol building. If you are feeling especially hungry, then consider ordering the giant Great Dane pizza, which at 56 cm / 22 inches in diameter, will comfortably feed an entire family.

Located on West Broadway Street and just a stone's throw away from the Grand Theater is the Serafina. This Italian restaurant is popular with locals, with specials on its dining menu including sausage carbonara, Sicilian tiger shrimp with gnocchi, Italian chicken and dumplings, and house-made meatballs served with a tasty arrabbiata tomato sauce.

For some of the best fried green tomatoes imaginable, search out Adelia's Bakery and Cafe on the Wilkinson Boulevard (Highway US-127). At Adelia's you can also enjoy freshly made paninis and sandwiches, pasta dishes, chicken salads and takeaway lunch boxes, not to mention the mouthwatering dark chocolate pie. However, do bear in mind that this is a fairly small and extremely popular eatery, and it can therefore become rather crowded at lunchtimes, so try to arrive early and with time to spare.

The Sage Garden Cafe is a reliable bet for tasty vegetarian dishes and crab cakes, and sits within the Wilsons Nursery grounds, on the East-West Connector Route 676. Children will enjoy the freshly made pizzas at Johnny Carino's Italian Kitchen, which is another restaurant situated on this lengthy highway, on the southern side of Frankfort.

In downtown Frankfort, the Bistro 241 on West Main Street is a reliable choice for classical American dining and comes with excellent calamari, shrimp dishes, salads, surf and turf, and a faultless bread pudding. This particular restaurant prides itself on being able to say that it sources most of its ingredients from the city's very own farmer's market.
