Frankfort Events, Things to Do and Festivals 2014 / 2015

(Frankfort, Kentucky - KY, USA)

Throughout the course of the year, Kentucky's capital city hosts a number of notable annual festivals, although the list of offerings is not exactly what you could realistically call extensive.

Also known as the Grand Theater, Frankfort's Center for the Arts regularly hosts local events, which range from concerts and comedy stand-up gigs, to circus performers, brass bands, tribute acts, musicals and plays - often being performed by the Bluegrass Theater Guild. Regular live music can also be enjoyed at the Kentucky Coffeetree Cafe on West Broadway Street on Sunday lunchtimes, where the Ridgewood Boys have been known to play a mixture of gospel music and blues.

Offering something for all of the family is the Frankfort Capital Expo Festival, held every year over a Thursday, Friday and Saturday during the early part of June. Large crowds are drawn to the expo, meaning that accommodation is often rather on the scarce side during the proceedings.

The Capital Expo was first held in the city in the early part of the 1970s and today draws crowds of thousands, who come to see the live entertainment, check out the artisan stalls and make the most of the plentiful food vendors. There are also carnival rides, two stages with live music, a cornhole tournament, a classic car cruise-in and various competitions. The expo draws to a close on the Saturday night, when the fireworks display named 'Rumble on the River' takes place,

Also well worth looking out for each year in Frankfort is the Art in the Gardens event at Liberty Hall, held between mid-January and mid-February. During this festival, the beautiful landscaped grounds of the Liberty Hall Historic Site on Wilkinson Street come alive with artists displaying their creations, such as paintings, photos and sculptures.

In May, the Carnival of the Arts comes along, being held at the Cornerstone Art Gallery on East Broadway Street. The Derby Day Carnival of the Arts is also held at this time of the year, along with the Governor's Derby breakfast, with roughly 5,000 people choosing to attend these festivities.

The Independence Day fireworks are a notable highlight on July 4th, while later on in the year, in mid-September, the Fall Arts Festival comes to the Josephine Sculpture Park on Old Lawrenceburg Road. And towards the end of October, the Pumpkin Fest sparks the arrival of Halloween and the time for tricking or treating.
