Getting Around, Boise Travel, Transport and Car Rental

Located in southwest Idaho, Boise is easy to reach via plane, road and bus / train combination, and has good transport services. This is a remote city, yet it has a regional airport within its city limits and a major interstate highway goes right through the south of the city, conveniently providing direct links with both Portland and Salt Lake City.

Greyhound buses serve Boise both directly and indirectly, offering the cheapest long-distance travel option, while Amtrak operates train / bus combinations to and from the city.

Boise Airport (BOI) / Arriving by Air

Boise Airport is situated a few miles south of the city center and is a transport hub for a large part of southern Idaho. There are flights here from many Western and some Midwestern hubs, with the likes of Alaska Airlines, Continental, Delta, Northwest, Southwest and United offering services here. For those coming from overseas, Salt Lake City International Airport is the closest major air facility to Boise. Shuttles and taxis run from the airport to the city.

Car Rental

Major car hire rental offices are located at the airport and on Broadway Avenue. For those coming from afar, Interstate I-84 comes in to Boise from the northwest and carries on in a southeasterly direction to Salt Lake City.

Buses and Coaches

Buses operated by Greyhound Lines serve Boise with regular services from Salt Lake City and Portland throughout the day, as well as from destinations farther afield, such as both San Francisco and Chicago. These latter services usually involve a change in Salt Lake City. Although Greyhound buses are comfortable and relatively cheap, long journeys by bus can be tiresome.

Trains

Amtrak trains and buses run to south Boise along the Pacific Northwest line with bus / train combination tickets. Connections go via Salt Lake City from several major US destinations.

There are many reliable taxi firms, providing transfers from the airport to the city and its major hotels. Taxi firms include A-1 Cab, ABC Taxi, Black and White Cab, Boise City Taxi and Yellow Cab.
