Both the biggest city and the Idaho state capital, Boise also serves as Ada County's seat. Located on the southwestern side of Idaho and close to Canyon County and its city of Nampa, Boise is divided into a series of different neighborhoods, such as downtown, the East End, the North End, Southwest, Northwest, Southeast, West and Warm Springs, amongst others.

The city is a part of the sizeable Boise City-Nampa Metropolitan Area, which now boasts a population approaching 700,000 and is often referred to as simply the 'Treasure Valley'. Apart from Boise and Nampa, the other significant city based within this metropolitan area is Meridian. Of note, more than one-third of the state's entire population lives in this area.

Downtown Boise is easy to reach, being connected by Interstate I-184, which branches off the southern Interstate I-84. The I-84 connects many outlying places of interest, including the suburbs of Hillcrest, Pioneer and Sunrise Rim, as well as the city's airport and the Simplot Sports Complex.

The principal business district of Boise is edged by a series of thoroughfares, namely Grove Street, State Street, 4th Street and 9th Street. Those looking to eat out will find a wealth of restaurants concentrated within downtown Boise, being particularly clustered around the plaza of the Grove, which is fully pedestrianized. Tourists looking for a taster of local history may find it rewarding to take a stroll along Grove Street, looking out for the Basque Block and its attractions relating to the state's old Basque pioneers.

Further eateries are based within converted warehouses around Old Boise and also the 8th Street Marketplace. Maps of the city are useful for self-navigators, being best sourced at the Boise Visitors Center, which stands on Front Street, next-door to the CenturyLink Arena (used for ice hockey, basketball, boxing and concerts) and close to the Basque Museum and Cultural Center.
