Lake Louise Landmarks and Monuments

(Lake Louise, Alberta - AB, Canada)

View of the Fairmont ChateauThroughout the Banff National Park and the Lake Louise area, beauty triumphs over man in so many ways, with breathtaking mountain landmarks, immense valley formations. However, whilst nature had no hand in creating the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, it is undeniable that this huge structure is a major local landmark, although locals do tend to consider its rather showy exterior somewhat of an eyesore, blocking a great view of the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

Do make the effort to reach the Valley of the Ten Peaks, when ten awesome mountain landmarks await and simply beg to be photographed. Close by and near to Lake Louise and the Moraine Lake, the Paradise Valley is both a small village and exceptional attraction, being close to the Rivercourse and McLaughline hamlets, and home to the popular Three Cities Arena.

One of the most famous and hard-to-miss hotels in the whole of Alberta, the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is located on the eastern shoreline of the actual lake, close to the Plain of the Six Glaciers Trail, with its immense white structure reflecting into the calm waterfront. Around 10 km / 6 miles from the Lake Louise village and backed by both the dramatic Canadian Rockies and conifer forests, the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is amongst the region's most famous landmarks at dates from the very late 19th century. However, subsequent fire damage in the mid-twenties destroyed the oldest wooden 'Rattenbury' section of the hotel, meaning that today, the most historic portion still remaining was constructed in 1913. Until the 1980s, the Fairmont Chateau was only used as a summer hotel, although now remains open throughout the year, catering to the busy skiing crowd in the winter months. One of the latest additions was the Mount Temple Wing, which was built as recently as 2004 and includes an enormous ballroom, used for many leading functions. Today, the Fairmont Chateau towers some eight storeys high and contains just under 550 guest rooms, most of which enjoy outstanding lakefront views and scenery.

Valley of the Ten Peaks

The Valley of the Ten Peaks remains amongst the most impressive natural landmarks around Lake Louise and this magnificent valley is crowned by no less than ten enormous snowcapped mountain peaks. Lying next to the Moraine Lake and visible for literally miles, the tallest of the peaks include Neptuak Mountain, Mount Fay, Mount Tuzo, Mount Allen, and also the Deltaform Mountain, which presides over the range at some 3,425 metres / 11,237 feet in total. The sheer scale and immense beauty of the valley really does need to the experienced first hand, since even the very best photographs cannot do these blue-coloured mountains justice. It is easy to spend an entire day here, with many recommended hiking trails surrounding the Moraine Lake, including a 3-km / 2-mile trail to Consolation Lake.

Paradise Valley

Address: Banff National Park, Lake Louise, Alberta (AB), Canada, CA
Another of the wonderful mountain landmarks of the Banff National Park, Paradise Valley is close by and is widely known for its extreme beauty and mixture of neighbouring meadow land and dense forests. The Paradise Valley is situated directly north of the Moraine Lake, and approximately 3 km / 2 miles from its junction off Lake Louise Drive. There is a very pleasant hiking trail leading to the valley, with most tourists choosing to approach Paradise Valley from the Lake Annette diversion, where the views of Mount Temple (3,543 metres / 11,625 feet) are quite splendid. Campers will enjoy an overnight stay at the nearby camping site, which heads the valley and is usually extremely busy. The Sentinel Pass trail may also be of interest, on the southerly ridge.
