Trujillo Shopping and Districts

(Trujillo, La Libertad, Peru)

Central street viewMost visitors to Trujillo won't find the shopping scene particularly enthralling or interesting, although there are certainly some highlights. The Calle Bolivar is a very intriguing part of Trujillo and home to a huge selection of opticians, while close by, there are also some large shopping centres and supermarkets, such as the Supermercado Merpisa on the Pizarro.

To experience how the locals do their shopping, spend some time exploring the spreading daily street market (mercado), which resides on the Avenida Los Incas. One of the busiest and most chaotic street mercados in this part of Peru, those shopping at Trujillo's market will find all kinds of fresh produce, homewares, copies of pre-Columbian ceramics, and endless leather goods. With a little friendly haggling, market prices can soon be reduced.

Where to Shop

The city of Trujillo has become well known in Peru for its shoemaking and the main shopping neighbourhood around the Ayacucho and Pizzaro roads is a good place to pick up some quality, handmade leather shoes. Alternatively, head to the Alameda del Calzado shoe market on the Avenida Espana, where leather sandals are for sale at almost 'give away' prices.

Alternatively, many tourists prefer the shopping available close by, in the seaside resort of Huanchaco, which is just a short distance to the north-west of both Trujillo and Chan Chan. The jewellery for sale at Huanchaco's acclaimed beachfront Mercado de Artesania is not to be missed at any cost.
