Callao Events and Festivals

(Callao, Peru)

Photo of festivities at NadandoAlthough there are a number of seasonal events and popular things to do in the Callao area, most of the biggest festivals are held next door, in Lima. Callao cannot help but be somewhat overshadowed by the calendar of annual events in Lima, and with so much on offer so close by, it is quite likely that your holiday in Peru will coincide with some kind of festival or religious celebration, particularly around Easter time, when Holy Week (Semana Santa) is one to look out for.

Annual events in Callao start with New Year's Day, on January 1st, which is a national holiday throughout Peru. Other notable festivals and holidays include Labor Day on May 1st, Inti Raymi on June 24th, the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul on June 29th, and the Peru National Independence Days, held on July 28th and 29th.

Callao Festivals and Events 2014 / 2015: General Information

Also very much celebrated in Callao is the Feast of Santa Rosa de Lima on August 30th, the Battle of Angamos Day on October 8th, All Saints Day (Day of the Dead) on November 1st, and the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8th. On January 18th in Lima, the Festival of Lima commemorates the founding of the city, which is followed in February by street carnivals and other popular events, such as the Lunahuaná Adventure Sports Festival.

Not to be missed is the Jazz Festival in Lima, which is hosted each year during April by the International Jazz Association of Peru. Those holidaying in Callao during July may also like to join in the Fiestas Patrias celebrations, based in the historical centre of Lima, around the Plaza Mayor, where highlights include military processions, folkloric music, flag racing and a 21-cannon salute.
