Florianopolis Shopping and Districts

(Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil)

Florianopolis contains a good range of shopping opportunities spread around the island of Santa Catarina, with local shops selling everything from fashion and beachwear, to sunglasses, handmade jewellery, art works and wooden carvings. At one side of the Praca XV de Novembro, the Rua Felipe Schmidt is a good place to start, offering both window shopping and endless opportunities for a spot of serious people watching.

Located on the Rua Bocaiuva, close to the Praca Governador Celso Ramos, the Beiramar Norte Shopping Centre stands off the Avenida Mauro Ramos and just a short distance from downtown. This mall overlooks the waterfront and comes with almost 200 shops, together with a cinema complex and an array of restaurants. A little smaller and to the east, in the Santa Monica area, is the Iguatemi Mall, which resides on the Avenida Madre Benvenuta.

Where to Shop

Opened in the early 1980s, the Shopping Itaguacu mall on the Rua Geroncio Thives is another very notable complex and comprises some 180 shops and a seven-screen cinema. A relatively recent addition to the shopping scene in Florianopolis is the Floripa Mall, which houses approximately 160 stores and a large multiplex cinema with eight screens, being a good place to pick up some quality surf boards and general surfing equipment.

Just a couple of blocks from the Jurere International Beach, the Jurere Open Shopping area has become known for its stylish restaurants and cafes, and laid-back atmosphere. For something with a little more character, the historic Public Market is brimming with Brazilian handicrafts and dates back to the end of the 19th century.
