Although there are numerous commercial galleries in and around central Florianopolis, there aren't many offical art museums as such. One reliable choice is the Casa Natal de Victor Meirelles (Victor Meirelles House and Museum), which serves as an exhibition space for many pieces by renowned 19th-century Brazilian artist Victor Meirelles de Lima (1832 to 1903).

Located on the Avenida Governador Irineu Bornhausen, on the northerly coast of Florianopolis, the Centro Integrado de Cultura is another notable venue for art buffs, since it is home to the Museu de Arte de Santa Catarina (Museum of Art of Santa Catarina) - an exceptional gallery boasting over 1,000 works of art

The Casa Natal de Victor Meirelles is located within a beautiful 19th-century building and provides a real glimpse into the life of acclaimed Brazilian artist Victor Meirelles de Lima (1832 to 1903). In 1952, the house where Victor Meirelles was transformed into the museum that you see today, as a tribute to his life and achievements. Many of Meirelles's original art works are on display here, including a series of sketches and many large canvasses, being accompanied by temporary exhibitions throughout the year. Guided tours are available and take place in the afternoons, from Tuesday to Friday.

Centro Integrado de Cultura - CIC

The Centro Integrado de Cultura really is a 'must-see', since is contains a number of individual attractions. Especially popular is the Museu da Imagem e do Som - MIS (Museum of Image and of Sound), where many audio-visual exhibits are displayed, celebrating and documenting the island's past. Also part of this complex is the Museu de Arte de Santa Catarina - MASC (Museum of Art of Santa Catarina), which functions as one of Brazil's most noteworthy art galleries. If you time your visit right, you may also be able to catch a performance at the Centro Integrado de Cultura's popular Ademir Rosa Theatre - capable of seating audiences of just over 950 people.
