Freeport Shopping and Districts

(Freeport, Grand Bahama, Bahamas)

Photo of the Port Lucaya MarketplaceShopping is a major activity in Freeport and Lucaya. There are two massive shopping complexes to choose from - the International Bazaar and the Port Lucaya Marketplace. The older International Bazaar has lost a lot of its shops in recent years, and with them much of its pizzazz. However, this is still a good place if you want to browse a wide range of goods from around the world.

These days, the popular choice for shopping in the Freeport area is the modern, snazzy Port Lucaya Marketplace. Where the International Bazaar feels a bit rundown, the Marketplace is clean and stylish. The architecture is appealing and there always seems to be live music playing.

When to Shop and Where

In addition to the large number of upscale shops and restaurants, the Port Lucaya Marketplace has an area of colourful Bahamian huts where locals sell souvenirs and handicrafts.

All of these elements give this spot a real festival-like atmosphere, which is always good for the shopping vibe.

Right next door is a traditional Straw Market, where you can shop for inexpensive woven items with a more Caribbean feel, such as baskets, handbags, and hats. This funky little market is also an ideal place to pick up a few souvenir T-shirts. Most shops around Lucaya and Freeport are open Monday through Saturday from 09:00 to 18:00.

The vendors here have a decent selection of the usual Bahamian woven goods and artwork. It is quite acceptable to bargain on the price at the independent stalls, especially during the low season.
