Freeport Beaches and Water Sports

(Freeport, Grand Bahama, Bahamas)

Waterfront view of undeveloped coastal stretchBeing a Caribbean island, Grand Bahama certainly doesn't disappoint when it comes to beaches and contains a number of idyllic sandy tropical beaches, many of which are just a short distance from Freeport.

In general, the best beaches stretch eastward from the Freeport area to McLean's Town. Well-known names include the Lucaya, Taino and Xanadu, although the further away from the resort hubs you go, the more secluded and locally flavoured the stretches of sand become.

General Information

Just south of Freeport is Xanadu Beach, one of the most popular and scenic sands on Grand Bahama.

Even with slightly more than 1.5-km / 1-mile of beachfront, this spot still manages to become rather crowded during the winter, when tourists flock here to soak in the tranquil waters, and experience the soft sand and swaying palms. Xanadu is a great beach for water sports like parasailing, jet skiing and snorkelling.

Tropical beachfront, complete with white sandIn the Port Lucaya area, both Lucaya Beach and Silver Point warrant a look. If you favour a beachfront stroll, head to Lucaya and walk in a westerly direction, enjoying the views and thinning crowds as you reach Silver Point.

At Taino, to the east of Lucaya and next to Sanctuary Bay, you are likely to encounter stalls selling freshly prepared conch salad and other tasty seafood-based snacks. Extending several miles to the east of Taino are the two beaches of Churchill and Fortune, while further east is Barbary Beach, as well as the magnificent Gold Rock Beach, which lies on the southerly shore of the Lucayan National Park.
