Basel Art Galleries

The Kunstmuseum (Museum of Art) is amongst the most notable of the galleries within Basel and contains a diverse mixture of art works from the last two centuries. Many people come here to marvel at the creations by leading pop artists and modern expressionist painters, such as Picasso.

Basel's other leading art galleries include the Kunsthalle (Art Hall), which is to be found within the Old Town area and is considered to be one of the most important contemporary exhibition venues in the whole world. Exhibitions have been held here as far back as the 1870s and today the Basel Art Hall supplements its extensive exhibits with videos and audio installations.


Modern art is also the subject at the Basel Museum for Contemporary Art (Museum für Gegenwartskunst), which enjoys a particularly scenic setting alongside the River Rhine. Acclaimed artists featured here include Beuys, Nauman and Trockel, amongst many others.

Other popular art galleries in the Basel area include the neighbouring Fondation Beyeler Gallery just outside of the city, the Baselland Art House (Kunsthaus Baselland) in the city suburbs, and the rather unexpected Karikatur and Cartoon Museum, which is located on the St. Alban-Vorstadt, in the Old Town area, and features some 3,000 original sketches and drawings.
