Lloret de Mar Restaurants and Dining

(Lloret de Mar, Catalonia, Spain)

Most Lloret de Mar restaurants are in the beach and city centre areas, catering to tourists with dining menus listing English breakfasts, fish and chips, and other UK staples, as well as Mexican, Italian, Dutch, German, Chinese and Indian food. Fast-food chains are everywhere, but authentic Spanish and Catalonian eateries and bars are very much in the minority.

The quality of the offerings varies, as do prices, with restaurants close to the beach charging more than those in less crowded parts of town. The few upscale hotels can be relied on to deliver fine dining and good service, but at a price which sets them apart from the mainstream tourists in Lloret de Mar. Searching for genuine local cooking is best done in the residential districts, away from the more touristy areas.

What to Eat, and Where

Every area in Spain has its own regional cuisine, based on traditional seasonal ingredients and recipes. With Lloret de Mar's thriving tourism economy, there is certainly no shortage of choice and variety in the town's many hundreds of restaurants and eateries. However, catering to tourist tastes has resulted in an overall loss of quality and individuality in the food offered. Catalonian dining can still be found here if you ask around, but nearby Tossa de Mar has a better reputation for local Spanish cuisine.

Fresh flavours and interesting ingredients are hallmarks of local restaurant dishes, and the town's location near the sea and the mountains gives Lloret de Mar opportunities for an interesting mix of flavours. Fish and shellfish are combined with game, fresh vegetables and herbs, with tasty results, as in chicken or rabbit with sea bass, prawns or bream. Starters include roasted aubergines served cold and mixed with onions and peppers, and cold meats with salads heavy on tomatoes make a great lunch. Fresh fruits provide ideal desserts, and local wines are delicious.
