Lloret de Mar is surrounded by ancient structures, towns, villages and fascinating archaeological sites, plus many man-made attractions, all of which make for exciting day trips and excursions when the beaches lose their draw.
Of course, if you are just looking for a different expanse of sand, then the coastline either side of Lloret de Mar provides a huge choice of alternative beaches nearby, the majority of which are easy to reach by road. Whether you are travelling by train, bus or hire car, most attractions are within a reasonable distance, leaving you plenty of time to see the sights.
Tossa de Mar
The Old Quarter of Tossa de Mar is known as the 'Vila Vella' and dates from the 12th century, being enclosed by extensive city walls and towers, with the remains of an ancient fort high on its hill. Less commercialised Tossa has a 'villagey' feel about it, with several museums and attractive old churches. There are also some interesting ruins of several Roman villas just outside town. Those planning a day trip to Tossa de Mar will be pleased to learn that it is just 20 minutes away, being located to the east.
Barcelona
The magnificent city of
Barcelona is a comfortable drive away from Lloret de Mar and is one of the world's most exciting destinations, whether for culture, archaeology, history, shopping, museum-hopping or almost any other holiday activity. Barcelona really does warrant a long excursion or holiday, since it comes with such a wealth of quality attractions. Some of the most popular include the palaces within the Barri Gòtic quarter, the aerial tramway along the harbourfront, the Placa d'Espanya and its imposing centrepiece fountain, and the treasured Joan Miró Museum (Fondacio Joan Miró). As you walk the streets of Barcelona you will immediately notice the strong Gaudi influences. A shopping expedition along the famous Las Ramblas street is a must.
Girona
At approximately 42 km / 26 miles to the north, the ancient town of
Girona is the perfect day trip destination. Architectural gems include incredibly tall terraced dwellings in narrow streets, Girona Castle and a walled Old Quarter, while the regular Saturday market is fun. For the best views, take a stroll on the ancient walls and soak up the atmosphere of daily Spanish life. If you prefer golf, then the surrounding countryside golf courses may be of interest.
Dali Theatre Museum

This astonishing museum was built to Salvador Dali's design in the ruins of the Figueres Theatre and opened in 1974. Quite simply, it's surreal, topped off with a transparent geodesic dome, and contains 'rooms' designed by Dali, as well as many of his outstanding works. The structure is meant to be seen in its entirety as a unique work of art by this genius of an artist. Visitors are often surprised to find that Dali is actually buried here, in a basement crypt.

Parc Natural del Cap de Creus

This vast natural reserve is home to wild, mountainous territory, rivers, lakes and valleys. A huge variety of flora and fauna thrive in the Parc Natural del Cap de Creus, due in no small part to its humid, damp micro-climate and its protected coastal runs, which stretch for approximately 6 km / 4 miles and are called home by many rare species.

Sa Riera Park

This rich nature reserve is totally man-made and holds a Mediterranean forest, lake and river. An unusual feature is its underground irrigation system, which encourages the growth and diversity of the park's flora and fauna. Sa Riera Park is located just outside of Tossa de Mar and is filled with scenic walking trails, which take you along the coastline and also to the Hermitage of Sant Grau.

Marineland Catalunya

This vast marine zoo and themed water park features everything from dolphins, sea lions, rare water birds, otters, seals and penguins, to an adventure water park with fun attractions to delight the kids. Most visitors will agree that the bottlenose dolphins are the stars of Marineland Catalunya, and regular dolphin shows display their strength, agility and intelligence. Free buses run from Lloret de Mar to the facility. For precise times of attractions and shows, it is worth calling first or checking the website (www.marineland.es), as these may vary.
