Trondheim Airport, Vaernes (TRD) Information
(Trondheim, Sor-Trondelag, Norway)
The joint civil / military air transport hub of the Trondheim Vaernes Airport is a shared facility between the commercial operations of the complex and the Royal Norwegian Air Force's Vaernes Air Station. This commercial airport is one of the busiest in
Norway, with a passenger throughput of roughly four million. Located between a fjord and a river in the Stjordal municipality, the complex holds two passenger terminals, with Terminal A serving domestic travellers and Terminal B serving international flights.
Several international flights at Trondheim Airport operate on a seasonal basis, including Icelandair's flight to
Reykjavik, Finnair's
Helsinki route, Lufthansa's
Frankfurt flight and Norwegian Air Shuttle's flights to
Dubrovnik and
Split. KLM operates a regular service to
Amsterdam on a year-round basis. Major Scandinavian cities and many Mediterranean resort destinations are covered by Scandinavian Airlines, Norwegian Air Shuttle, Wideroe and Wizz Air, and Estonian Air flies to
Tallinn year-round. General aviation is also provided for.
The first commercial flights began here in the early 1950s, with half of a military barracks being converted for use as a terminal. From 1963, modern jets began using the site and a purpose-built terminal was constructed soon after. Even nowadays, most of the complex, with the exception of the passenger facilities and the air-traffic control building, is owned by the Norwegian Ministry of Defence.
