No visit to Hungary or indeed Gyor can really be thought complete within first spending a day or longer exploring the proud capital that is Budapest.

At around 128 km / 80 miles from Gyor, the attractions at Budapest are close enough to warrant the journey and those who choose to spend some time here will be far from disappointed. Other close by attractions which warrant a day trip or two are to be found within the cities of Sopron, and Szombathely, where you can enjoy sights such as the late 18th-century Szombathely Cathedral, Bishop's Palace, the Smidt Museum, the Iseum, and the Roman Garden of Ruins.

Budapest

Budapest contains a number of truly world-class attractions, such as the Roman Aquincum Museum, the Citadella fortress, the Royal Palace (Buda Castle), the Budapest Historic Museum, and the medieval Vienna Gate, a historic entrance into the Old Town district. The Jewish Quarter of Budapest is well worth exploring and contains the world's second-largest Jewish house of worship, the Great Synagogue, while also of considerable interest to many are the Buda Hills, which offer a scenic backdrop to much of the city and even feature a railway and chair lifts.

One of the closest attractions worth visiting, the small and perfectly formed town of Pannonhalma lies roughly 20 km / 12 miles from Gyor and can be reached in under half an hour. Much of Pannonhalma is presided over by the Várhegy (Castle Hill) and also the town's historic abbey, which is renowned throughout Hungary and is now listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Pannonhalma Abbey is just over 1,000 years old and features an especially beautiful Neo-classical library.

Sopron

The small city of Sopron stands at the base of the Lovér Hills, around 87 km / 54 miles west of the city itself. Those arriving from Gyor will find a number of notable attractions worthy of exploring more fully, the majority of which are based within the inner town (Belváros) and include the Fire Watch Tower and its 200 steps, which can be climbed to enjoy some great city views. A great way to get a good feel for Sopron is to take the Castle Wall Walk, or visit the exhibits of the Sopron Museum itself, which are displayed at the Fabricius House and the Storno House. Close by, the Ferto Hanság National Park and Lake Ferto often appeal to lovers of the great outdoors.

Visitors wishing to experience the attractions within the city of Szombathely will find them some 106 km / 66 miles to the south-west of Gyor, with a travel time easily under two hours. Szombathely has long been an important crossroad in western Hungary and a large number of travellers within Western Transdanubia tend to pass through this city. The Saturday Market is amongst the main attractions within Szombathely and has taken place here ever since the Middle Ages.
