View of shops and cafes in the city centreA city of reasonable size and stature, Gyor is home to plenty of restaurants to suit most travellers. Whilst it is true to say that many of the city's restaurants and other dining options do specialise in Hungarian cuisine, others provide a more international flavour, with French-style eateries and Italian pizzerias being firm favourites with tourists.

Wherever you choose to eat in Gyor, all restaurants have one thing in common, they certainly fed you well. You can expect filling, man-size portions when dining out here, leaving little room for a pudding.

What to Eat

Hungarian food can be creamy and quite heavy, and is generally meat-based, with many of the dishes being quite seasonal. Do bear in mind that if you order a 'saláta' (salad), you will probably be served a plate of various pickled vegetables. An increasing number of restaurants in Gyor are now tending to favour a more modern style of Hungarian cuisine, known locally as 'kortárs magyar konyha'.

Where to Eat

A number of cheap eateries are based around central Gyor, such as the Márka, a popular self-service restaurant on the Bajcsy Zsilinszky Utca, which is always a safe bet for an inexpensive meal. Those in search of fine dining in Gyor would be advised to check out the many restaurants based around the Arany János Utca, the Czuczor Gergely Utca, the Dunakapu Tér and the Bécsi Kapu Tér, where you can enjoy good views across the Carmelite Church as you savour your meal.
