The Tammerkoski Rapids
Lake Nasijarvi lies far away on the northern side of Tampere and it drains into Lake Pyhajarvi, to the south. The two lakes are connected via the Tammerkoski rapids, which have become quite a dramatic feature in the city. We saw some salmon swimming in the rapids, which I found quite exciting, as I didn't know they were there.

The Observation Tower and Pyynikki Park
Pyynikki Park is a nice place to come. It stands between Lake Nasijarvi and Lake Pyhajarvi. The scenery here is quite beautiful and there is an observation tower. We climbed to the top, where there were so really good views across Tampere. To regain my energy after the climb up the tower (!) I bought us some freshly made doughnuts from the adjacent cafe. Yummy. :0)

The Orthodox Church in Tampere
There are Lutheran churches all over Finland and in Tampere, the Orthodox Church on the Tuomiokirkonkatu caught my eye. It was built in the 1890s and is often referred to by the Finnish as St. Alexander Nevski. It is red brick and very ornate and has some striking Russian features, namely the onion-shaped domes. I was told when I visited that the Orthodox Church ranks very highly in Scandinavia, where it is considered to be the finest of its kind. It is open most days and some services are held here.
