The City Library (Metso) is an especially stylish landmark in the city, and is one of the city's most impressive examples of contemporary architecture. Many tourists and backpackers come here to make use of the free access to the Internet.
The Tampere region comprises a series of different outlying municipalities and is home to no less than four different universities.
Connected to the busy thoroughfare known as the Hameenkatu, the Keskustori (Central Square) contains a number of highly notable buildings, including the Old Church, the Town Hall and the city theatre.
The Koskipuisto Park is one of the city's numerous plentiful green spaces and contains many seasonal flowers, walking trails and a playground for children. It is worth coming here to view the modern Virvatulet sculpture, which commemorates the Finnish soldier.
Lake Nasijarvi is the largest lake in the whole region. The water from Lake Nasijarvi feeds the Tammerkoski rapids, around which the city was built.
Summer cruises around the shore of Lake Nasijarvi are always popular, while by winter, the lake surface becomes completely frozen.
For some of the best cityscape views possible, book a table at the revolving restaurant at the Nasinneula Tower and enjoy the scenery. Each complete revolution of the restaurant takes around 45 minutes.
The skyline of the city is beautiful when viewed from afar. Many expansive areas of green parkland surround the city.
One of the city's two main theatres, the Tampereen Teatteri was established as early as 1903 and stands across from the Municipality Hall.
The Town Hall (Raatihuone) serves as a centre for the city's political events. Each year on December 6th (Finland's Independence Day), the public square directly outside of the Town Hall hosts a variety of annual celebrations and soon fills up with excited crowds.
The city centre contains plenty of heavily pedestrianised areas, complete with benches.
