Tampere Museums
(Tampere, Pirkanmaa, Western Finland, Finland)
A number of quality museums are to be found within the Finnish city of Tampere and in particular, the Lempäälä is of great interest and importance. With five small museums located on the stretch of Kuokkala, this part of Tampere is a must-see. The museums on Kuokkala include a shoemaking workshop, a period barber's shop and even a traditional village shop from the mid-1920s. Many themed events take place at these Tampere museums and close by, particularly during the summer.
When holidaying in the Tampere area, the most popular museums to look out for include the Hämeen Museo, which is located in the centre of Näsinpuisto Park and is amongst the oldest museum in the city, dating back around 100 years. Close to Moomin Valley, the Tampere Mineral Museum (Kivimuseo) is an unusual attraction and features many colourful rocks and stones, together with minerals, dinosaur fossils and even ancient meteorites.
For a trip down the Cold War's memory lane, the Museum of Lenin (Lenin Museo) offers an insight into the life of the famous Russian communist Vladimir Lenin and is actually run by the Finland Russia Society.
For families, a visit to the Museum of Dolls and Costumes (Nukke ja Pukumuseo Hatanpään Kartano), on the southern side of Tampere, is perhaps more suitable, with its enormous collection of historic dolls and related toys. Sportsmen will be pleased to find the Finnish Football Museum (Suomen Jalkapallomuseo) close by in the football town of Valkeakoski, where the history of this popular Finnish sport over the past century is well documented.
