Entered through the Abbey Gatehouse, the Glastonbury Abbey is one of the town's most prominent landmarks and was actually founded in the 17th century.

A popular subject of paintings, postcards, photos and promotional brochures, Glastonbury Tor is certainly one landmark that will be familiar with many visitors and is located on the very outskirts of town, within the Summerland Meadows area. In the town centre itself, the Market Cross serves as a historical monument and strong reminder of the town's medieval past.

Glastonbury Abbey

The remains of Glastonbury Abbey stand in the heart of the town, being bounded by Chilkwell Street, Bere Law, Magdalene Street and also High Street. The Abbey was formerly a very powerful and impressive Somerset monastery and it is believed that the first church on this site dated from the 1st century. Today, the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey are mainly of the church constructed following the famous fire of 1184. Expect to find doorways, walls, arches, stone carvings, medieval tiles, an Abbot's kitchen complete with flagstone floor, a religious hawthorn tree, fish and duck ponds, seasonal gardens, and the reputed tomb off Arthur and Guinevere, being strongly associated with stories of the Holy Grail.

Perhaps the town's most famous of all its old landmarks and steeped in mythology, Glastonbury Tor draws a steady stream of visitors throughout the year, and is believed by some to be an actual gateway to the underworld. This imposing hill stands around 160 metres / 525 feet in height and is topped by the medieval remains of the roofless Church of St. Michael. The Tor is connected by a regular 'Tor Bus' from Magdalene Street between May and September. Those wishing to climb to the very top of the Tor will find a steep, winding pathway, which affords some stunning views along the way. It takes approximately 45 minutes to reach the top, depending upon fitness levels.

Market Cross

The Glastonbury Market Cross is an especially important local landmark and has medieval origins. However, this present day structure actually dates from 1846, with the current Market Cross being built to replace the earlier structure, which was destroyed soon after the turn of the 19th century. As part of the town's 300 year anniversary celebrations in 2005, the Market Cross was fully restored and remains in a good state of repair.
