Liverpool Sports and Outdoor ActivitiesWhen it comes to the world of sports, the Liverpool Football Club is quite literally a major player. Founded in 1892 and nicknamed 'The Reds', this Premier League football club has won numerous important games, including League titles, European titles, FA Cups, UEFA Cups and more.

The Liverpool FC is based at the Anfield Stadium, which currently has a seating capacity of just over 45,000 and lies next to Stanley Park. Another hugely popular sport in the city is horse racing, with the world-famous Aintree Racecourse being established in the summer of 1829 and known for its Grand National steeplechase, which was won by renowned racehorse Red Rum no less than three times during the seventies.

The Liverpool Football Club has been one of the most successful clubs in history and has produced many world-class players, including the likes of John Barnes, Kenny Dalglish, Steven Gerrard, Kevin Keegan, Michael Owen, Jamie Redknapp, Ian Rush and Ronnie Whelan. Look out for the interesting football museum, gift shop, extensive conference facilities and regular soccer matches during the season.

Another major spectator sport in the city is rugby and there are a number of important local teams. These include both St. Helens (rugby union) and the Buccaneers (rugby league), with the latter playing home games at the Sefton RUFC, located in nearby West Derby.

Cricket has a loyal following and the Liverpool Cricket Club is located within the south-easterly suburb of Aigburth, just across from the Alfred Holt Recreation Ground. Founded in 1807 and boasting a capacity of around 3,000 spectators, the club also features tennis and squash courts, as well as a bowling green.

The Aintree Racecourse is one of the most popular attractions in Liverpool and is within easy reach of the city centre, via the A59 / Walton Road. Many exciting horse races take place at Aintree, including the Grand National in April, which attracts thousands of spectators. Of note, the North End Sports and Social Club is close by, next to the Kirkdale Cemetery.

West Kirby Marine Lake

The enormous West Kirby Marine Lake is located in the Wirral area, roughly 30 minutes to the west of the city, and is a great place to come if you enjoy water sports. Popular activities include sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, jet-skiing, cycling and walking.

Liverpool Marina and Harbour Club

Close to the city centre, alongside Coburg Wharf and just across from Navigation Wharf, the city's Marine and Harbour Club has excellent facilities for yachts and boats. Some boats are available for hire, while there is also a club house, bar and restaurant.

Southport Marina

Southport Marina can be found roughly 35 minutes to the north of Liverpool, in the town of Southport. Visitors will enjoy regular trips on a large paddle steamer, jet-ski rides, picnic areas and appealing waterfront views. There are also pleasant walking trails, plenty of ducks to feed and some small shops.
