Waterfront viewThere are numerous art galleries located in Exeter, housing both permanent collections and commercial spaces with changing exhibitions. The Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery (RAMM) is one of the main galleries, while the EVA Studios has gained quite a reputation.

There are also some extremely noteworthy collections of fine art maintained at the University of Exeter, which comprises a mixture of more than 7,000 paintings, sculptures and drawings. The university also boasts a simply stunning Sculpture Walk, where you can walk amongst wonderful creations by famous artists, such as Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore, which number 25 in total and stand amidst tranquil ponds and beautiful landscaped gardens.

Established as the Exeter Artspace in 2007 and with a total of 36 individual studio spaces, EVA Studios is located next to the castle remains and actively encourages local artists from the city. Regular exhibitions and events take place at the studios, with many opening their doors to the public and welcoming visitors. Exhibitions include modern paintings, sculptures, photography, pottery and even some installation art works.

The Phoenix Gallery is part of the Exeter Phoenix Arts and Media complex, and offer a series of temporary exhibitions, which are generally rotated on a four-weekly basis and are often of a contemporary nature. There are four different basement studio spaces available at the phoenix, where artists are able to promote a range of visual arts and digital media, with both advice and support being given along the way. Budding artists may also like to enrole in one of the art-related classes available here, which cover topics such as landscape and portrait painting, and creative life drawing.

Spacex Gallery

Publicly funded and also registered as an educational charity, the Spacex Gallery on Preston Street was officially founded in 1978 and stands in between King Street and West Street, being just a short walk away from The House That Moved. Both emerging and international acclaimed artists exhibit their work here, side by side, and so there is likely to be something to interest most visitors. Of particular note, the Spacex is regarded to be one of the most important contemporary art spaces currently existing in the United Kingdom.

Turner Gallery

The Turner Gallery on Queen Street is known for both its contemporary and religious-themed paintings. Most people come here to view the works of local artist Brian J. Turner, who is currently painting his way through the entire bible in an undertaking known as the 'Bible Project'. Limited edition prints, landscape paintings and abstract works are also often of interest here.

Now based at the University of Exeter in the Innovation Centre, the Centre for Contemporary Art and the Natural World organises many exhibitions, workshops, demonstrations and activities throughout the year and also contains an impressive library of relevant art books. Supporting local artists, developing new understandings and exploring our relationship with nature, the Centre for Contemporary Art is easy to reach.
