The seaside town of Falmouth boasts an awesome coastline and a number of superb beaches, while the Roseland Peninsula offers walking trails and a historic castle, based in St. Mawes.

Of course, no trip to Truro is really complete without a trip to St. Austell, where the world-class attractions of the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project await.

St. Austell

One of the largest towns in Cornwall, St. Austell lies around 23 km / 14 miles north-east of Truro and is home to a number of truly world-class tourist attractions. These include the magnificent Lost Gardens of Heligan, which were opened to the public in the 1990s after they were rediscovered and thoroughly restored, with much replanting and numerous specimen plants. Expect to find ancient tree ferns, jungle areas and a large restaurant. Also close to Truro, St. Austell's Eden Project is home to a series of giant conservatory domes housing many large tropical and exotic plants.

Falmouth

Located around 18 km / 11 miles south from Truro, the many attractions at Falmouth and centred around its spectacular beachfront. This seaside resort is a lively spot with a busy, working docklands and regular ferries to St. Mawes, which depart from the Prince of Wales pier. Amongst the main attractions in Falmouth, the 16th-century Pendennis Castle is Cornwall's biggest fortress, while the National Maritime Museum features around 40 different boats and can be found along Discovery Quay.

Newquay

A bustling coastal resort, famous for its surfing conditions and beautiful sandy beaches, Newquay is roughly 19 km / 12 miles to the north of Truro and can be reached in just over 20 minutes by car. Newquay is a fairly modern town, with a strong surf vibe and many stunning annual events Many top nightclubs stand around the town centre and are amongst the best in the whole of Cornwall, and beyond. Apart from the many beaches here, attractions in the town include Newquay Zoo and Waterworld, both of which are within the large Trenance Park, and the Blue Reef Aquarium along the Towan Promenade.

Roseland Peninsula

On the southern side of Truro, the Roseland Peninsula is a great place to explore and contains a selection of charming coastal village attractions, such as Portloe along the South-West Coastal Path, and also Veryan, known for its two thatched roundhouses and seasonal daffodil displays. Also worth a look in this region, the town of St. Mawes is a popular day trip and features a rather surprising cloverleaf structure historic fortress, which is a particularly fine example of its kind.
