Photo of Surfers ParadiseAlthough Byron Bay and Sydney both share the same state, New South Wales, these popular tourists destinations are hardly next door to each other. In fact, the attractions of Sydney are more than a 12-hour drive to the south of Byron Bay and a similar train journey away, while Brisbane is approximately 165 km / 103 miles to the north and a reliable excursion for many.

Far closer to Byron Bay, tourists often choose to take a day trip to nearby Bangalow, which is around 15 minutes to the west and known for its heritage attractions, antique shops and fine dining. Located a little further away and to the south-west, the city of Lismore provides the perfect base for exploring the Far North Coast Hinterland and is conveniently situated alongside the rainforest and beaches. Notable attractions in this small city include the Lismore Regional Art Gallery, Rotary Park and the Tucki Tucki Nature Reserve - a protected koala habitat brimming with native Australian wildlife.
