Central viewOver the years, Byron Bay has become something of a destination for backpackers, and whilst there is a more than adequate selection of hotels, accommodation also comes in the form of competitively priced backpacker lodges and YHA hostels.

Lodging in Byron Bay is relatively expensive, although standards are high and views are often exceptional, with some hotels overlooking the rainforest or the scenic coastline. Just a short drive away, further accommodation is available in the neighbouring town of Coorabell, with lodges and rainforest retreats being based along Newes Road.

Where to Stay

Backpackers looking for budget lodging in Byron Bay will find a good choice of affordable options, a number of which stand right next to the beach and come with verandahs, small dormitories and modern amenities. Especially reliable is the Blue Iguana Beach House on Bay Street, the Nomads Main Beach Hostel on Lawson Street, and the Backpackers Holiday Village on Jonson Street, where the self-contained apartments are particularly popular.

Conveniently near to the town centre is the Cape Byron YHA, which is to be found on the corner of Byron Street and Middleton Street, where it boasts its very own travel agent, selection of shops and heated swimming pool. Those who favour a more alternative lifestyle should consider the relaxing accommodation available at the Arts Factory Lodge on Skinners Shoot Road, where teepees, yoga lessons and didgeridoos are just some of the main attractions. Campers will find that the Broken Head Holiday Park on Beach Road, on the southerly side of Tallow Beach, is amongst the best of Byron Bay's campsites / caravan parks, with an exceptional setting.

However, if you are interested in holidaying at one of the heritage cottages next to the Cape Byron Lighthouse, you will need to book well in advance.

Providing comfortable B&B accommodation, the Byron Baystay Bed and Breakfast is a notable mid-range lodging option and is situated on Marvell Street, just a short stroll from the town centre and the beaches. The Bamboo Cottage on Butler Street is another good-value choice for families, while for luxury hotels, the five-star Byron at Byron Hotel Resort and Spa on Broken Head Road certainly stands out, being conveniently near to both Tallow Beach and the Arakwal National Park. A little more pricey in Byron Bay, the award-winning Villas of Byron also boast five-star accommodation and come with marble floors, individual pools and plenty of privacy.
