Cape Byron Lighthouse photographSeveral imposing landmarks punctuate the coastline of Byron Bay, affording notable photo opportunities and vantage points, where seasonal migrating whales can be observed. The Cape Byron Lighthouse is easily the most well-known and recognisable.

Built at the turn of the 20th century and towering for some 18 metres / 59 feet in height, this bright white lighthouse has become a major landmark in New South Wales, now attracting in excess of half a million visitors each year. As well as the Cape Byron Lighthouse, other prominent sights in the Byron Bay area include the Two Sisters Rocks at Broken Heads, rivers, scenic valleys and several cascading waterfalls at the Nightcap National Park.

Cape Byron forms the most easterly point in the whole of mainland Australia and also serves as being the home of one of the region's most famous landmarks - the Cape Byron Lighthouse. The Cape Byron Lighthouse is easy to reach by road, with a car park conveniently sited next door. From the nearby Captain Cook Lookout you will be able to soak up some serious views of the coastline, where dolphins can often be seen jumping in the water, as well as the seasonal migrations of giant humpback whales (June and July / September, October and November). A popular circular walking trail stretches for around 4 km / 2.5 miles along the Lighthouse Road - look out for the wild wallabies along the way.

Two Sisters Rocks

Located on the southerly side of Byron Bay, the Two Sisters Rocks are an especially famous natural sight and regularly photographed by tourists. The Two Sisters Rocks are to be found just off the coastline of Broken Heads and these two small rocks stand alongside each other, surrounded by the sea.

Rivers and Waterfalls

When it comes to natural landmarks in Byron Bay, few are more impressive than the region's plentiful rivers and waterfalls. In total there are three rivers dividing the countryside - Clarence River, Richmond River and Tweed River. Together, these rivers have defined the region and formed a number of valleys, being intersected by various tributaries. Countless waterfalls line the rivers and creeks, although it should be noted that some are located on private land. Particularly impressive waterfalls include the Minyon Falls and Protester Falls in the Nightcap National Park, along with the Killen Falls in nearby Ballina.
