Shah Alam Restaurants and Dining

(Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia)

Shah Alam doesn't have a vast choice of eateries, especially if you've just come over from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's capital city and dining capital. There are several local, so-called Mamak restaurants, though, which can be found all over the city and are clean, with plenty of tasty food.

Dining at Shah Alam hotels is also a good bet. Many of the city's best hotels come with their very own good restaurants that cater to the Western palate. The Grand Bluewave Hotel falls into this category and comes highly recommended for an evening meal.

What to Eat, and Where

The local chain of Mamak restaurants are a good bet for cheap, wholesome Selangor dining. You will find them in the city centre and in Section 7, in the west of the town, where they have a variety of different foods. Cheese 'thosais' (also known as 'dosas') are always popular and are a traditional fermented crepe, made with black lentils and rice.

You can also go for grilled fish (ikan baker) at Medan Selera near the water park, in Section 2 of town. The stalls here open up early. Shah Alam's top hotels are another reliable choice for those dining out, with the Grand Bluewave Hotel featuring an excellent barbecue on weekends. There is high tea served here as well, while the Mamak restaurants at Bukit Jelutong are also good for tea, with the traditional 'teh tarik' tea being very tasty and thirst-quenching.

For picnics and fun eating, head to the Shah Alam Lake Gardens in Section 14 - a major attraction in the centre. There are some interesting floating seafood stalls here, or you can sit on the grass and simply scoff on sandwiches and barbecue chicken.
