Nagoya Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO) Information

(Nagoya, Chubu, Central Honshu, Japan)

Photo showing Nagoya CastleThe Nagoya Chubu Centrair International Airport serves the important commercial and business city of Nagoya. It is set in Tokonomo City, on a man-made island located in Ise Bay, Japan. Construction began in the year 2000 and the island itself was planned with consideration to environmental issues such as the flow of the tide around its base. The island's sides were built up with natural rocks, encouraging marine species to form colonies.

Originally formulated as the replacement for the ageing Nagoya Airport, the Nagoya Chubu Centrair International Airport finally opened in 2005 and nowadays serves an annual passenger throughput of between nine and ten million. Airlines using this facility include Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways, as well as other flag carriers such as Korean Air, United Airlines, Thai Airways, Lufthansa, Air China, Cathay Pacific, Delta Air Lines and EVA Air. Routes covered include Japanese domestic destinations, as well as major Chinese and Korean cities, Frankfurt, Manila, Bangkok, Singapore, Abu Dhabi and Honolulu.

The northern area of the ultra-modern terminal supports domestic flights, with the southern area covering international destinations. Each section has dedicated facilities such as check-in and ticket counters, security procedure desks, arrival and departure lounges, and baggage claim facilities. The terminal's four storeys are divided into a second floor Arrivals hall and a third floor Departures hall, with the ground floor of the building being given over to ground operations such as catering and maintenance, and the fourth floor dedicated to shops and eateries.

Facilities:

Cars

The mainland and city are accessed by a well-signposted toll road leading to the Chita Chuo Expressway and the Nagoya Expressway. This route passes by both Chita and Tokai, and takes in the region of 40 minutes (this time is dependent on reasonable traffic conditions). Worth noting, traffic can get very heavy close to and within the city.

Buses

Limousine buses regularly run from the terminal to Nagoya, stopping at major hotels and landmarks, with taxis for onward transportation easily hailed. Local buses also run to the city and remote destinations such as Nagano.

Trains

Private rail line Meitetsu links the airport with Nagoya's main rail station, from where the JR lines and the Tokaido Shinkansen (bullet train) line to Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe and Hiroshima all operate. The uSky limited express service runs on the half-hour and takes in the region of 30 minutes to reach the Nagoya Railway Station.

Taxis

Metered taxis are found at the rank just outside the terminal and are the most expensive way to get to the city, although better-value shared taxis or minivans can be arranged. Popular taxi destinations include Anjo, Atsuta, Chiryu, Midori, Minami, Minato, Mizuho, Nishio, Tempaku, Toyoake and Toyota.

Ferries

Tsu Airport Line ferries run from the airport across Ise Bay at regular intervals, taking roughly 40 minutes and giving the best onward transportation for those heading for Ise and Wakayama. The Ise Bay ferry runs between nearby Tokoname harbour and Toba, along the coast.
