Chubu Centrair International Airport opened for business in 2005 and was designed to replace the old Nagoya Airport as the chief international gateway to the Nagoya and Chubu regions.

The airport is highly modern and stands on a man-made island within Ise Bay, south of Nagoya. Chubu Airport offers all essential facilities, such as banks, ATMs and bureaux de change, as well as a plethora of restaurants for dining and refreshments, shops for luxury and last-minute purchases, and a business centre for business travellers. WiFi access is also available throughout the airport and at Internet kiosks in selected areas, and various ground transport options allow you to travel into nearby Nagoya with ease. Passengers will find bus transport and trains connecting the airport to the city and other major Chubu destinations. Taxis can also be found outside and car hire travel desks are situated inside the terminal.

Car Rental

The city of Nagoya is large and offers plenty of scope for exploring, as does the greater Chubu region. Visitors with rental vehicles will find their opportunities for daytrips increased considerably with a rental vehicle, removing them from the restrictions associated with public transportation. The city has a good selection of car hire travel companies. At the airport, you will find the desks of Avis, Budget, Hertz, Japaren and Mazda.

Buses and Coaches

Nagoya can be reached easily by bus, with services operating both day and night from neighbouring cities and long-distance destinations. Road travel is obviously slower than air travel, but considerably cheaper and a good transport option for those holidaying on a budget. The journey from Tokyo to Nagoya takes about 6 hours.

Trains

Nagoya is highly accessible by train being situated on the Tokaido Shinkansen route, partway between Tokyo and Osaka. From Tokyo, the journey takes about one hour and 40 minutes; from Kyoto, the quickest route takes just under minutes; while from Osaka, the shortest journey takes around 50 minutes. Once in the city of Nagoya, a highly efficient subway transport is at your disposal, offering four main lines, which cover a large proportion of the city.

Taxis

Metered taxis can be hailed in the street or picked up from stands located at strategic parts of Nagoya city centre. Alternatively, you can ask your hotel to book one by telephone if you have urgent business to attend to. Few taxi drivers speak any English, so this travel option is especially useful to ensure that you get to the correct destination.
