Surabaya Events, Things to Do and Festivals 2014 / 2015

(Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia)

There are lots of things to do and events to enjoy during the annual calendar in Surabaya. Close to the city hall, the Balai Pemuda arts centre regularly features changing exhibitions and performances, such as the ever-popular Festival Seni Surabaya (FSS) each June.

The various national holidays and Indonesian festivals add further interest in the city, such as the Birthday of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad on March 9th, and the Indonesian Independence Day (Hari Proklamasi) festivities on August 17th.

Other prominent events in and around the city include the Kite Festival (Layang Layang), fishing boat celebrations, and food festivals in the metropolitan city of Pakuwon.

In late April, the Surabaya Culture Parade commemorates the anniversary of the city, which is now over 700 years old. This popular event features an array of performing arts and costumed processions, and often runs well into May, with the first parade starting at the Tugu Pahlawan monument.

Each July, the Yosakai Dance Festival is now a well-supported event and originates from Kochi, in Japan, a sister city of Surabaya. Also staged in July is the Surabaya Cross Culture Art Festival, which takes place at the City Hall and offers an insight into many traditional cultures outside of Indonesia, in countries such as China and South Korea.
