The tropical climate of eastern Java is typically Indonesian in character and Surabaya enjoys plenty of sunny weather, with temperatures regularly peaking at more than 30°C / 86°F. Each year, there are two main periods of weather experienced in Surabaya - the dry season and the wet season.
The dry season is exactly as its sounds, minimal rains and a hot climate. Falling between May and September, the dry season in Surabaya is at its driest between July and August, with these months proving to be especially popular with holiday makers and Indonesian sightseers.

The constant high temperatures in Surabaya are as a result of its close proximity to the equator, with the island of Java lying just to the south of this central line. If you have come to Indonesia in the dry season, then you will be able to spend plenty of time outside, exploring the attractions and taking day trips. If you find the climate a little oppressive and humid at midday, then simply take time out and head to an air-conditioned restaurant.
Those visiting Surabaya during the wet season should pack accordingly, with light waterproofs and cotton clothing, suitable for high temperatures. When the rainy weather does arrive, it generally comes in the form of sudden tropical storms and downpours, and although sunshine is often not far away, the rain can last for several days on occasion. December and January are reliably the wettest months, when precipitation levels top 500 mm / 20 inches or even 600 mm / 24 inches.
