Getting Around, Udaipur Travel, Transport and Car Rental

(Udaipur, Rajasthan, India)

Photo of locals travelling by elephantA variety of different transport options present themselves in Udaipur, ranging from speedy express trains and public buses, to convenient taxis and rather quirky three-wheeler auto rickshaws, which for many are immediately evocative of an Indian vacation. Auto rickshaws are perfect for short distances, being small enough to travel in and out of the traffic.

Taxi transport tends to be more suitable for slightly longer journeys, with popular routes linking Udaipur Airport and the Badi Lake. Ideal for either short or long distances, bus transport in Udaipur covers the region of Rajasthan very comprehensively, amply suiting the needs of the budget traveller.

Udaipur Airport is located just over 20 km / 12 miles to the east of the city centre itself and this facility also goes by a number of alternative names, which include Dabok Airport or Maharana Pratap Airport. This is a domestic facility, serving flights from Indian cities such as Jaipur, Jodhpur, Mumbai and New Delhi, with the main airlines include Jet Airways, Indian Airlines and also Kingfisher. Taxi transport at the airport is the only way to travel to into central Udaipur and is both convenient and extremely inexpensive, so rarely causes a problem.

Car Rental

If general, renting a car in India is not usually recommend, since the roads can be rather hectic and of poor quality. The roads around Udaipur are actually rather good and the city is central to the Golden Quadrilateral express highways. In particular, the National Highway 8 (NH8 Delhi to Mumbai) links Ahmedabad in just over three hours, and also the city of Jaipur, which you can travel to by car in under six hours.

Buses and Coaches

RSTC bus transport serves the city well and links may nearby places of interest. Regular public buses travel to Agra (six hours), Ajmer (eight hours), Jodhpur (eight hours), Chittor (three hours) and also to New Delhi (14 hours). Private bus transport is also available in Udaipur and provides travel to a number of additional destinations, such as Ahmedabad (six hours), Mount Abu (five hours) and Mumbai (16 hours). For the longest distances, do consider paying extra for a more comfortable sleeper coach.

Trains

The rail network around Udaipur has been recently upgraded to broad gauge, providing a much better and more complete transport service, being operated by Indian Railway. Daily express trains now travel as far afield as Ahmedabad, Ajmer, Chittor, Jaipur, Mumbai and New Delhi. Destinations within South India are a little more difficult to reach and will likely involve the need to change trains at some point.

Taxis and Auto Rickshaws

Taxi transport is never hard to find in Udaipur and although my taxi drivers are happy to present a list of official prices for set routes, it is certainly worth shopping around, and do bear in mind that you will be paying a return price, even if you are just travelling in one direction. Auto rickshaws are generally much cheaper and completely unmetered, so it is therefore quite essential that you first agree upon the fare before you climb inside.
