Your memories of your time spent in Udaipur will often feature the time that you spent within its traditional Indian restaurants. However, when dining out in Udaipur, be ready to some serious spicy Indian food, since the city's restaurants certainly do like their food to be heavily flavoured.
Fine dining is an important part of life in the city and this is reflected in the sheer quantity and quality of eateries and restaurants on offer, a number of which reside within the biggest hotels. Also in Udaipur are plenty of rooftop cafes, where diners are able to not only enjoy the sunshine, but some impressive views across the lakes.
What to Eat
Although there are a number of Western-style restaurants in Udaipur, most will find that the Indian food is usually of a much higher standard. Rajasthani and Gujarati cuisine is known to be very much vegetable based, with 'ghee' (clarified butter), playing an important part in many dishes, as well as chutneys.
Dal-bati is just one dish that you are likely to encounter and comprises baked wheat balls and spicy lentils. Sweets are generally served before the main course and often made with corn. Udaipur is famous for its 'bhang lassis', a beverage made with iced water, yoghurt and 'bhang' (a derivative of marijuana), and these really are best avoided!
