Udaipur Airport (UDR) Information

(Udaipur, Rajasthan, India)

Many of the Rajasthani city of Udaipur's famous Rajput-era palaces are now luxury hotels, drawing visitors in pursuit of the exotic and the romantic to touch down at Udaipur Airport. Set a short distance from the city, this complex is tiny in terms of modern aviation hubs, with just enough room to house three Boeing 747s at any one time. Although the airport's airy modern terminal has just one gate and can only handle 600 passengers at any one time, its navigation technology and landing aids are up-to-the-minute and include an instrument landing system for use in bad weather.

Udaipur Airport, also known as Dabok Airport and Maharana Pratap, is supported by national flag carrier Air India and its subsidiary, Air India Regional, as well as by Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines. Routes offered are Jaipur and Jodhpur, as well as Ahmedabad, Delhi and Mumbai.

The city of Udaipur is fast becoming a favourite destination for upmarket Western travellers, possibly through its exposure as the setting for a number of movies, including the James Bond film Octopussy. Many compare it with Kashmir for its beautiful lakes, while its superb architecture alone is worth the trip, as is its romantic ambience. The size and laid-back atmosphere of this complex offer a good introduction to this unique city.

Buses

There is no public or commercial bus service here, although it is worth noting that many upscale hotels in Udaipur are happy to provide airport shuttles for their guests. This service usually needs to be arranged in advance.

Taxis

Travel by taxi is the most common means of onward transportation from the airport to the city of Udaipur. Fares must be prepaid at a desk in the Arrivals hall before approaching the taxi rank outside the terminal. In addition to taxis, there are cheaper auto rickshaws, although these vehicles are not as safe and not really suitable for those with lots of luggage. Auto rickshaw fares will need to be negotiated with the driver.
