By way of contrast, the rainy season brings weather that is mainly characterized by high humidity. Variations in temperatures occur between the coastal and inland areas of this African country.

Seasonal Climate Variations / When to Go

The dry season occurs between October and June. During that time, average daytime temperatures are 24°C / 75°F in coastal resorts. Inland, the climate tends to be hotter, with averages of around 32°C / 91°F. Dry windy weather known as the 'Harmattan' can cover the countryside in sand and dust. Those visiting The Gambia at this time of year should bring plenty of cool clothing and sun protection.

The rainy season in The Gambia runs from the middle to the end of June and comes to an end in October. Temperatures rise during this period, with August often being the hottest and wettest month of the year. Indeed, temperatures can reach in excess of 40°C / 104 °F. Whilst the hot wet weather may not be to every visitor's taste, this time of year is great if you've come to admire the scenery or wildlife, both of which flourish in this sort of climate. Don't forget, though, to bring a sweater for the cooler evenings, as well as plenty of insect repellent.
