The very notable El Paso Museum of Art is home to a large collection of traditional and more modern paintings. With more than 100,000 visitors each year, this popular gallery relocated to its present purpose-built building in 1998, with the International Museum of Art taking over its former residence on Montana Avenue after the move.

Other appealing cultural institutions in the city include the El Paso Museum of History, which contains many displays about the rich heritage of the area. A unique and popular tourist attraction, the National Border Patrol Museum documents the important role this branch of the US government had in protecting America's border with Mexico over the years. Just across from the Convention Center, the stunning El Paso Museum of Art was established in the late 1950s and is an absolute must for anyone with an interest in Southwestern and Mexican art. Permanent displays are augmented by regular temporary exhibits of both historic and modern art works, from both sides of the border. Also of interest are the priceless Kress Collection and a Gilbert Stuart portrait of George Washington.

The Museum of History celebrates the passage of the surrounding region through the most turbulent eras of past centuries. Among the intriguing displays are exhibits on the impact of the arrival of the conquistadors, the Pueblo Revolt, settlement by pilgrims, US Cavalry struggles against Indians and outlaws, and the survival of the Tigua Indians throughout.

International Museum of Art

Situated within the stately Turney residence and managed by the city's International Association for the Visual Arts, the International Museum of Art stands on Montana Avenue and is just a few blocks away from Houston Park. The permanent collections comprise four main gallery spaces, known as the African, Kolliker, Red Room and Western galleries. Also likely to be of interest is the Mexican Revolution Gallery, which contains a variety of paintings by acclaimed artists such as Bill Rakocy and Mario Parra.
